After reviewing the various methods of analysis, the author introduces his graphical method in which an equivalent polygonal frame is constructed for each arch. This method is applicable to any shaped arch and any kind of loading, and is applicable not only to fixing trial depths of keystones or for approximate estimates, but is the most accurate possible. It provides complete solutions for the directions and magnitudes of the internal forces in each ring stone of an arch founded on unknown reactions, and is especially suited for determining the stability of arches whose abutments are not fixed in position. Accordingly, the analytical treatment of the subject is quite general, and the application of the graphical and analytical methods is illustrated by the solution of numerical examples.
