The author examines the variations in the atlas, that bone at the base of the skull responsible for supporting the head, by studying over 200 specimens. The author finds that these variations are not confined to any particular part but are frequently observed in the transverse processes and then the posterior arch. A brief discussion is also given on the author's theory on the homologies of the transverse processes. The variations in the vertebrae are a testament to the diversity of human anatomy and can have clinical importance, which the author illustrates with a case of an abnormal atlas in a dissection subject.
