Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents an account of the life and times of the prominent Chinese official Li Hung-chang. Born into a respected family in Anhui, Li's rise began during the Taiping Rebellion, when he raised a regiment of militia against the rebels. His military acumen caught the attention of Zeng Guofan, the Viceroy of Hukwang, and Li quickly rose through the ranks. Recognized for his diplomatic skill, Li played a crucial role in managing foreign affairs, most notably in negotiations with Japan over the Formosan conflict and with Russia over the Ili crisis. Despite his authority, Li's legacy remains complex. His ruthlessness in suppressing the rebellion and his willingness to use foreign powers to achieve his goals were controversial. However, his modernization efforts, such as the establishment of the China Merchants' Steam Navigation Company and the introduction of the telegraph, laid the groundwork for China's future development. Through the author's utilization of archival sources, the book captures the complexities and contradictions of a man who played a pivotal role in China's transformation during the late 19th century.
