Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a new way of understanding how periodic continued fractions correspond with square roots of non-quadratic whole numbers, based on the author's examination of the work of Carl Jacobi. Jacobi's approach to solving these equations was to convert the continued fraction into a special type of series, then use this series to derive two new equations. The author shows how this series can be applied to an infinite number of additional equations, using only a single continued fraction. The author also shares an alternative method of deriving equations corresponding to square roots, using properties of the continued fraction itself. The book explores several instances of this concept, including when there is no middle term, and when there is. It also touches on the significance of prime numbers in this context and shares how each of these formulas for continued fractions can be reduced to a single equation by using a previously established formula.
