This elevation of classical works led to the second age of Latin language, with writers such as Politian and Bembo emulating the Romans in elegance and style. The Counter-Reformation and the Inquisition put an end to this flourishing literary environment, resulting in a decline in Italian literature from which it never fully recovered.
