Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book consists of translations of unilingual inscriptions discovered in the library of Assurbanipal, who reigned in the 7th century. Most inscriptions of this type include an Assyrian text alongside the Sumerian, but these do not. The author provides both a transcription of the Sumerian and an English translation of the text. Two of the inscriptions describe rituals surrounding the scapegoat, in which sins and ailments were transferred to a goat that was then sent away into the wilderness. The third inscription is an incantation uttered when a priest approaches the sick king, who is described as hairy and having several ailments. The priest places a gazelle head on the king's head, drives it away, and declares the king purified while asking for the curse to go with the gazelle. These texts provide scholars with valuable insights into the religious and medical beliefs and practices of the ancient Assyrians.
