Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of rood screens, those architectural elements that once separated the choir from the nave in churches across Europe. The author, a passionate advocate for the restoration of these screens, skillfully weaves together historical documentation, architectural analysis, and theological insights to build a compelling case for their significance. The book takes the reader on a journey through time, exploring the evolution of rood screens from their earliest forms in ancient Roman basilicas to their exquisite development during the Middle Ages. Through meticulous descriptions of specific examples, the author reveals how these screens functioned not merely as decorative features but as powerful symbols of faith and reverence. Drawing upon centuries of liturgical practice, the author underscores the deeply rooted tradition of separating the sanctuary from the congregation, highlighting how this architectural feature served to enhance the solemnity of worship. This book offers a captivating exploration of an often overlooked but deeply significant aspect of church architecture, reminding us of the rich tapestry of history and symbolism woven into the very fabric of our religious heritage.
