Godfrey Daly, a Catholic of ancient family, is a gentleman farmer with a kind and hospitable nature, but who is struggling to maintain his estate, Dalystown. The book explores the themes of the Irish struggle for independence, and the social and economic problems of the period. These are heavy themes, that add weight to the story without overpowering the narrative. The narrative is framed by the homecoming of Henry Daly, Godfrey's son. Henry's arrival brings joy to his father, but it is tempered by the knowledge of the difficulties that the family is facing. The book ends with Godfrey Daly's death and his son's assumption of the responsibilities of the family.
