Excerpt from The Dalys of Dalystown
The world, my dear; I replied, it''s dead outside, there.
My wife was about making some reply, when the sound of sleigh bells reached us.
There''s a sleigh, said she, I wonder who it can be at this hour.
No one to us, Lizzy, I replied. I don''t think any of our friends round here come it higher than dogs, and their approach is generally first announced to the calves of the legs of those who may be unfortunate enough to be in their way.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is set in Ireland in the 1850s and tells the story of the Daly family. Godfrey Daly, a Catholic of ancient family, is a gentleman farmer with a kind and hospitable nature, but who is struggling to maintain his estate, Dalystown. The book explores the themes of the Irish struggle for independence, and the social and economic problems of the period. These are heavy themes, that add weight to the story without overpowering the narrative. The narrative is framed by the homecoming of Henry Daly, Godfrey's son. Henry's arrival brings joy to his father, but it is tempered by the knowledge of the difficulties that the family is facing. The book ends with Godfrey Daly's death and his son's assumption of the responsibilities of the family.
