Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book traces the life and ideas of Pellegrino Rossi, an Italian patriot and scholar who lived during a tumultuous period of Italian history. Born in 1787, Rossi witnessed firsthand the rise and fall of Napoleon's empire and the subsequent restoration of Austrian rule in Italy. As a young lawyer and professor, he became involved in the movement for Italian independence and was forced to flee into exile after the failure of a liberal uprising in 1815. In exile, Rossi continued to write and speak out for Italian unity and liberalism. He eventually settled in Switzerland, where he became a professor of law and a prominent figure in the country's political life. In 1833, he was invited to France, where he taught law and political economy at the Collà ge de France and became a member of the Chamber of Peers. Rossi's writings and speeches on Italian politics were widely read and influential, and he is considered one of the most important figures in the movement for Italian unification.
