Questo lavoro, provocato in parte dalle accuse, onde anche ultimamente(�) si tent� di vituperarela memoria di ugo foscolo, � inteso a ritrarre la imagine di un caldo incontaminato Patriota. S' io sia riuscito nello intento non so; ed � certo pur troppo che ho bisogno da' miei lettori di molta indulgenza. Ad ogni modo mi terrei largamente ricompensato delle mie fatiche, dove almanco questo sersero ad altri di stimolo a scrivere del grand' uomo pi� degnamente e pi� compiutamente ch'io non abbia saputo. I giovani allora, saviamente avviati, apprenderebbero dal Cantore de' Sepolcri, come Oggidi' sin golarmente loro convenga d'amare la patria.
