Un libro in cui aneliti di irredentismo, motivi ideali di patriottismo e triestinità si fondano con slanci esistenziali e letterari, tesi a una soluzione sensuale della vita, al possesso del nodo più oscuro del desiderio, al significato di una passione il cui sfogo immediato e fatale può essere la morte. Nel breve racconto si intrecciano i destini di un ragazzo e di alcune ragazze. Lo scrittore rivive la sua giovinezza tra contadini e paesani: gli esempi morali che gli si offrono provengono dalla stessa terra, dai poveri frutti che offre, dall'asperità delle montagne del Carso.
