This book focuses on the evolution of the commercial spirit in Britain, Russia and Germany over a century from 1800 to 1900, a period the author claims stands alone in its political, religious and commercial life. The author begins by describing life in Europe following the French Revolution. Napoleon is described as a "colossus bestriding the world" and his defeat is largely attributed to the combined efforts of Nelson and Wellington. Following the Napoleonic wars a brief period of peace ensued as former adversaries put aside their differences to face a common enemy in the form of the ambitions of Russia. This book comes alive in its depiction of the social and political changes in the United States at the time of the Civil War. There is a fascinating account of the battle of Gettysburg viewed through the eyes of a young soldier. As the century progressed, expansionist ideals drove both European and American nations to seek new markets and territories. However, the steam engine and telegraph had not yet diminished the importance of sea power and in 1870 France suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Prussia. The book concludes by noting that the advances in science and invention observed in this period have created an industrial world with a global economic marketplace that favours nations with industrial capacity over those with large fighting forces.
