This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. The author, an experienced traveler and military officer, believes that an interior exploration could be accomplished in 14 years and puts forth a detailed plan for doing so. He argues that this exploration is necessary not only to fill in the blank spot on the map of the world that Australia currently occupies but also to protect shipwrecked sailors and facilitate the settlement of new areas. He suggests that there must be a large river flowing from some large body of water in the interior and discusses possible locations for such a river. He argues that exploring the interior would increase the wealth and power of the British Empire and urges the government to take up the task. The exploration of the interior of Australia is a significant historical event as it opened up new lands for settlement and increased scientific knowledge of the continent.
