Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the theological debate over which Psalms should be sung in worship. The author defines three positions: whether the exclusive use of the book of Psalms is a Divine warrant; whether the text used should be a literal translation or inspired paraphrase; and the Presbyterian Church's view on these matters. The book investigates the history of metrical psalm singing within the Church of Scotland, and argues that Dr. Pressley's views on the exclusive use of Rouse's Psalms, a version commonly sung by United Presbyterians, is weak both theologically and historically. Though he claims Rouse's version to be an inspired and literal translation of the original Psalms text, the author argues that Rouse's version is better understood as a paraphrase, containing a number of passages added to or altered from the original text. The author suggests that Dr. Pressley is therefore mistaken in his view that the exclusive use of Rouse's Psalms in worship is a Divine command.
