The author reflects on the varying forms of prostitution then prevalent in Parisian society, beginning with the perspective that such practices are a by-product of societal and financial factors. He explores the reasons why women enter such work, many of them due to financial need. The author reveals the hypocrisy of men who condemn prostitutes but regularly seek out their services and suggests that the existence of these women is a direct result of the sexual and economic inequalities inherent in the society of the time. Ultimately, the author articulates his view that for him the best form of sexual encounter is with a prostitute as there is no pretense of romance or long-term commitment, thus preserving the integrity of the arrangement.
