The collection of acts concerning the Institute is preceded by an introduction that brings together the acts relating to the creation and organization of the former academies founded in the 17th century under the patronage of Cardinal de Richelieu, Chancellor Seguier, Colbert, and Pontchartrain, with which the Institute and the current academies have numerous links. The author traces the major aspects of the organization of the former academies, then that of the Institute, indicating the plan that was followed for the classification of the documents and presenting the sources from which these documents were obtained. These links are examined in a study entitled The French Institute and the Former Academies (1889). This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
