The deep penetration raids by the USAAF against the Schweinfurt industrial complex in 1943 were among the most imaginative, risky and eventually costly campaigns waged by the Allies in their WWII bombing offensive against Germany. The mission concept was to reduce the Garman's production of ball-bearings by more than half, thus seriously crippling vital component supplies for tanks, aircraft, all forms of transport and hundeds of other mechanical devices essential to waging war. The author was a US Air Force navigator who participated in the first two Schweinfurt raids and while biographical, his detailed examination of the raids is also based on records from both Allied and Axis sources .Although well-planned the missions were considered by many to be too costly to risk. The raids went ahead, with varying degrees of bombing success, and losses were as heavy as predicted Elmer Bendiner asks who won this campaign, if anyone? More that 1200 US aircrew died in the two raids covered here, along with "numberless Germans," military and civilian. As for results the author asks why "German tanks, planes ,trucks and guns continued to come off the assembly lines in ever increasing numbers?" Despite his unanswered questions about the raids, Bendiner presents a graphic and detailed account of all aspects of these bombing missions, which constitute a still controversial Allied air war objective. "The Fall of Fortresses" was first published in the US in 1980, with this first British edition from Souvenir Press in 1981, 258 pages, 15 b/w photos. An excellent and thoughtful account of one man's tour of duty flying USAAF 8th AF B-17 Fortresses from England in 1943. Central to the story are 2 trips to Schweinfurt, both of which were very costly from the 8th AF point of view. A couple of incidents in his life, small in themselves, which occurred after he had completed his 25 missions and was awaiting transport back home, stick in the memory. Without wishing to spoil the story, one involved the casual racial prejudice of a fellow officer, the other was an encounter with the husband of a woman he had just slept with. Ref SS 6.
