Surprisingly scarce these days in the UK, one of the collectable studio vista | dutton PICTUREBACK series, which chose good subjects and authors, bound books well and had lots of illustrations (hence not just paperback, but pictureback). This volume - William Blake: the artist by Ruthven Todd - has by my count 117 illustrations in its 160 pages and it focuses, as its title promises, on Blake's art and not his poetry. As well as including famous pictures, Todd notes that he has tried to include others of equal quality which are not generally known, and so for example we get to see a calling card illustrated by Blake for George Cumberland. (Imagine having a business card designed for you by William Blake!) The illustrations are all in black and white but you can't have everything. Todd's approach is also distinguished by his concentration on Blake as a technical innovator, rooted in his reading of technical documentation that would have been available to Blake, and in actually trying out nearly all of Blake's techniques for himself. The book itself is in very good condition, with a little bit of creasing down the spine, but as it's well stitch-bound, this isn't a significant issue. A few other marks of shelfwear and handling are likewise very minor, just a few odd millimetres of rubbing and bumping if you look for them. N° de réf. du vendeur 1034
