The village so intimately studied in this engrossing book is Chuschi, a Quechua-speaking peasant community in the Andes of southern Peru. Billie Jean Isbell not only lived in Chuschi for extended periods but also became a participant in village activities through a number of compadrazgo -ritual kinship-bonds. Hence her presentations and analyses of anthropological data are enriched by personal insights. In constructing her interpretation of Andean reality, Isbell examines many aspects of life in Chuschi, such as vertical ecology, social classes, the bureaucratic authorities, the indigenous prestige hierarchy, private and public reciprocity, and the kinship structure. She describes the ten ritual steps leading to marriage and presents detailed accounts of the three major ceremonies of the village year: the ritual cleaning of the irrigation canals, the harvest festival, and the branding ceremony with offerings to the mountain deities. Finally, she shows the influence on Chuschi of the Chuschinos who have migrated to Lima. Because of its sophisticated ethnographic detail and its coherent and comprehensive treatment of the interrelations of ritual, symbolism, and social organization, this book is a major contribution to Andean studies and anthropology.
