XX "Not even the human and natural violence unleashed there in recent years can diminish the sheer physical beauty of Guatemala's Maya heartland. The rolling drive westward from the capital, through Indian villages and misty forests toward lake Atitlan, remains one of the great splendors of the Americas. And the scenery is greatly enhanced by the richness and variety of the woven costumes of the region. It has long been an ambition of the Center for inter-American Relations to mount an exhibition of these wonderful Guatemalan costumes. But the right opportunity evaded us until 1978, when it was suggested we approach a Manhattan investment banker, Stanley de J. Osborne. Mr. Osborne's mother, the late Lily de Jongh Osborne, had lived in Guatemala for many years and had become a keen student of the weaving tradition there. She had amassed several important collections and had written a book, "Indian crafts of Guatemala and El Salvador," that remains a classic source of information about the subject. After discussions, Mr. Osborne arranged to donate to the Center a large portion of his family's holdings. This collection would provide a firm basis for a definitive exhibition and catalog.".
