Synopsis

This is the first book to focus explicitly on how China’s rise as a major economic and political actor has affected societies in Southeast Asia. It examines how Chinese investors, workers, tourists, bureaucrats, longtime residents, and adventurers interact throughout Southeast Asia. The contributors use case studies to show the scale of Chinese influence in the region and the ways in which various countries mitigate their unequal relationship with China by negotiating asymmetry, circumventing hegemony, and embracing, resisting, or manipulating the terms dictated by Chinese capital.

Pál Nyíri is professor of global history from an anthropological perspective at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of Scenic Spots: Chinese Tourism, Cultural Authority, and the State (University of Washington Press, 2006) and Mobility and Cultural Authority in Contemporary China (University of Washington Press, 2010); coauthor of Seeing Culture Everywhere, from Genocide to Consumer Habits (University of Washington Press, 2009); and coeditor of Chinese Encounters in Southeast Asia: How People, Money, and Ideas from China Are Changing a Region (University of Washington Press, forthcoming 2016).

Danielle Tan is assistant professor of political science and Asian studies at Sciences Po Lyon, and research associate at Lyons Institute of East Asian Studies. She received her PhD in comparative politics and Asian studies from Sciences Po Paris in 2011. She is the author of book chapters and journal articles on contemporary Southeast Asia.

Wang Gungwu, chair of the East Asian Institute and University Professor, National University of Singapore; author of Renewal: The Chinese State and the New Global History (Chinese University Press, 2013) and Global History and Migrations (Westview Press, 1997); and coeditor of China and the New International Order (Routledge, 2008).
