The Castle has had its romances too, King James I of Scotland as a prisoner falling in love with Joan Beaufort; the fun and frolics of the Restoration, when Charles II laid out the Grand Avenue and Prince Rupert lived in the Round Tower. If the book has a hero it is George IV, who reconstructed the Castle as we see it today and greatly added to its treasures.
