This book by Detlev Peukert is a survey of the complex experiences and attitudes of ordinary German people between 1933 and 1945. It records how people lived during this period, how they evaded or accepted the regime's demands, and where they positioned themselves along the spectrum between the frontlines, the sidelines, and the firing lines. Highly acclaimed in Germany when it was published in 1982, this social history of the Third Reich is now available for the first time in English. Peukert begins by discussing the rise of Nazism in the economic chaos of the Weimar Republic, the bases of popular consensus upholding Nazism, and the potency of the "Fuhrer myth." He then analyzes the nature of opposition in the Third Reich, as it was manifested by the middle class, the working class, and the youth of Germany. Peukert describes the ways in which art and culture served to consolidate a popular passive consensus in Nazism and how misapplied scientific principles were used as an excuse to discriminate against biologically defined groups. Finally he analyzes the socially cohesive function of terror directed at "social outsiders" such as gypsies and homosexuals.
