Not price clipped (50s, £2.50), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 536pp. A reportage account, by author and journalist Mildred Spitz Savage (1919-2011), of the infamous case of Harry Solberg, a 20 year old who was charged with the brutal 1965 murder of a young married woman in the town of Barkhampsted named Dorothy Thompsen. State Police Major Sam Rome was in charge of the case and Lt. Cleveland Fuessenich was the officer whose investigation led to the arrest of Solberg. Rough interrogation methods were used and in the first trial the jury was hung and the coerced confession declared inadmissible. Solberg was acquitted at the second trial. Rome, however, was made State Police Commissioner. All this led to Fuessenich being made Commissioner in 1973 shortly before the murder of Barbara Gibbons in Falls village, not far from Barkhampsted. Her 18 year old son Peter Reilly, was grilled by State Police for nearly a day, and, convinced by the interrogators that he must have committed the crime during a blackout (since they told him they had conclusive evidence proving he killed his mother), he confessed. He was convicted, appealed, got a new trial and was eventually vindicated. Both crimes remain unsolved. N° de réf. du vendeur 007286
