The U.S. has a leaky talent pipeline for K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with too few students entering STEM majors and careers at every level - from those with relevant postsecondary certificates to PhD's. To stimulate and build interest in STEM, the National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Achieve have partnered to create The Next Generation Science Standards. The Next Generation Science Standards identifies the science all K-12 students should know. These new standards are based on the National Research Council's report, Framework for K-12 Science Education, which makes recommendations grounded in the most current research on science learning. A collaborative, state-led process also deeply informs standards that are rich in content and practice and arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education. The Next Generation Science Standards are specifically designed to meet the needs of all students, across all different levels of learning. Implementing the Next Generation Science Standards will better prepare high school graduates for the rigors of college and careers. The standards will shape students into science literate citizens, regardless of whether they choose to pursue a career in science or engineering fields. In turn, employers will be able to hire workers with strong science-based skills-not only in specific content areas, but also with skills such as critical thinking and inquiry-based problem solving. The Next Generation Science Standards offer a complete offline references to access when creating lesson plans and goals for students. This collection of books will be useful to teachers, policy makers, standards developers, curriculum designers, assessment developers, state and district science administrators, and educators who teach science in informal environments.
