CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Fine in unclipped DJ, now in mylar sleeve. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The American efforts to support their POWs with escape aids and secret communication is fully documented in this book written by one of the participants. MIS-X was modeled after the similar British war office MI-9 efforts. MI-9 shared their full range of support activities with the Americans. The two efforts developed a full range of escape aids, tools, and secret communications to support escape efforts from enemy POW camps. I interviewed a few POWs who directly benefited from these efforts, including Lee "Shorty" Gordon, the only American to score a "home-run" escape from Germany before D-Day. "Shorty" got his MIS-X escape aids from Kurt Kurtenbach the young American NCO who ran the American escape activities at Stalag VII-A. Likewise, Kurtenbach informed me how important MIS-X was to the POWs survival. Mr. Shoemaker's book is extremely important for documenting this vital POW support effort. Dismantled after the war, MIS-X records and materials were supposed to have been destroyed. While some were salvaged, it is the active participation and recollections of people like Mr. Shoemaker that we have an understanding of this program. There is some controversy related to the publication of this book. There are a number of reasons this publication is quite scarce. Was it suppressed? Did the USG try and buy all the copies? It would make for an interesting back-story if those who know would say. Regardless, its a great military narrative of a then, very secret organization and now highly sought-after by militaria collectors. N° de réf. du vendeur 1021028

Hardcover. Etat : Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. 267 pp. General wear to book and DJ. Nice, clean copy. DJ is not price clipped. Two WWII collectors have told me: 1) the government tried to supress the publication of this book because classified information had been released by error, and 2) the government tried to confiscate or buy-up all the copies of this book. I've not been able to confirm either, but both sound plausible. N° de réf. du vendeur 037735
