Gustav 'Old Red' Amlingmeyer and his brother, Otto (Big Red), cowpokes by training, discovered Sherlock Holmes through the stories and are now devotees of his method of 'detectifying'. The two brothers are in San Francisco in 1893 with an eye towards a real detective job. But that's not working so well and they are footloose, a little broke, and not-so-fancy-free. But serendipity is on their side. They run into an old acquaintance in Chinatown, who takes a shot at them. The girl Big Red has been searching for shows up bearing bad news. And a group of hatchet wielding Chinese tong members are out for their blood. Yep, their luck has changed - what was once merely bad is now truly catastrophic.

Steve Hockensmith has written a million-bajillion books. Six of them (so far) have been about mystery-solving cowboy siblings Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer. Six others are about mystery-solving 11-year-old siblings Nick and Tesla Holt. Two (soon to be three) others are about myself-solving tarot reader/reformed con artist Alanis McLachlan. Two more (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dreadfully Ever After) are about reanimated corpses and the women who love them. (No one solved any mysteries in those.) And three more (so far) are filled with short stories (many of which feature people solving mysteries). That adds up to a million-bajillion, right? Steve has been a finalist for the Edgar Award (twice!), the Anthony Award (twice!), the Shamus Award (three times!) and the Derringer Award (once...but he finally won!). According to Ed McMahon, he may already be a winner of the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes, but that was a long time ago so Steve’s guessing it didn’t pan out. To learn more about Steve, go to www.stevehockensmith.com. Or ask his neighbors about him. Just don’t ask them about “Steve Hockensmith.” They won’t know who that is. Say “the bearded guy in the end unit—you know...the sleepy-looking dude who’s always in those gnarly sweatpants.” You’ll get an earful.
In their third novel-length adventure, Sherlock Holmes-worshiping cowpokes Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer temporarily hang up their saddles and spurs and hit the wild (not to mention dangerous) streets of San Francisco. Despite their unfamiliarity with city ways, one thing remains the same: their unmatched talent for getting into trouble. It’s not long before they’ve run afoul of Chinatown crime lords and Barbary Coast cutthroats. Good thing the Amlingmeyers’ new, if duplicitous, friend Diana is along for the ride. But will even her wily charms save them when they stumble into the middle of a tong war? And can she help them track down the mysterious “Black Dove” in time to unmask a murderer...and save the entire city from disaster? “Other books and TV series have featured genre-melding cowboys armed with ratiocination as well as revolvers, but Hockensmith’s take is quite special. There’s his combination of intriguing mystery, breathless action, colorful characters and enough laugh-out-loud moments for the book to fit in the humorous crime category.” —The Los Angeles Times on The Black Dove
