The sex surrogate's "aim is to improve the quality of life . . . by helping . . . the subject develop an improved self-image and gain increased self-confidence." These are the underpinnings of the ability to become intimate with another person, and DeHaan hopes this book will open the door to intimacy for its readers. Although the setting is different, the book's message is much the same as other self-help sexuality books. DeHaan describes his work as a male sex surrogate, at times in sexual detail that seems unnecessary for the point of the book. The book does provide insights into the work of sex surrogates, particularly males; such information is otherwise not widely available to the layperson.
