Synopsis
Now the mainstay of the England batting line-up, left-hander Graham Thorpe is the man who can build on a good start and who can help his team to a formidable total - and the man who can keep his head down when all about him are losing their wickets. Yet in 2001, he decided to spend his winter with his young family rather than touring South Africa with the international side. At 30, he had had enough constant cricket after 10 years' touring and needed a break. He needed some balance in his life.
