Présentation de l'éditeur

This student-focused text addresses individual learning styles through the use of a complete study system that starts with a learning styles inventory and presents targeted learning strategies designed to guide students toward success in this and future college-level courses.

Students who approach math with trepidation will find that Intermediate Algebra, Second Edition, builds competence and confidence. The study system, introduced at the outset and used consistently throughout the text, transforms the student experience by applying time-tested strategies to the study of mathematics. Learning strategies dovetail nicely into the overall system and build on individual learning styles by addressing students’ unique strengths. The authors talk to students in their own language and walk them through the concepts, showing students both how to do the math and the reasoning behind it. Tying it all together, the use of the Algebra Pyramid as an overarching theme relates specific chapter topics to the ‘big picture’ of algebra.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Intermediate Algebra is a book for the student. The authors' goal is to help build students' confidence, their understanding and appreciation of math, and their basic skills by presenting an extremely user-friendly text that models a framework in which students can succeed. Unfortunately, students who place into developmental math courses often struggle with math anxiety due to bad experiences in past math courses. Developmental students often have never developed nor applied a study system in mathematics. To address these needs, the authors have framed three goals for Intermediate Algebra: 1) reduce math anxiety, 2) teach for understanding, and 3) foster critical thinking and enthusiasm.

The authors' writing style is extremely student-friendly. They talk to students in their own language and walk them through the concepts, explaining not only how to do the math, but also why it works and where it comes from, rather than using the "monkey-see, monkey-do" approach that some books take.
