Book Description:
"Crock of Gold is a novel written by James Stephens. Some editions have a foreword by Walter de la Mare. Truly unique, it is a mixture of philosophy, Irish folklore and the neverending battle of the sexes all with charm, humour and good grace.
It contains 6 books, Book 1--The Coming of Pan, Book 2--The Philosophers Journey, Book 3--The Two Gods, Book 4--The Philosophers Return, Book 5--The Policemen, Book 6--The Thin Woman's Journey, that rotate around a philosopher and his quest to find Cáitlin Ni Murrachu and deliver her from the god Pan and himself going through a catharsis. He himself is apprehended for murdering a philosopher friend and his wife who committed a peaceful suicide some months before, then whisked away by his wife the Thin Woman of Inis Magruth and the fairy folk, all the while encountering many notable characters, in particular Angús Òg, and the Thin Woman's encounter with the Three Infinites." James Stephens (1882–1950) was an Irish novelist and poet. James Stephens wrote many retellings of Irish myths and fairy tales. His retellings are marked by a rare combination of humor and lyricism (Deirdre, and Irish Fairy Tales are often singled out for praise). He also wrote several books (Crock of Gold, Etched in Moonlight, Demi-Gods) which are fiction, but loosely based on Irish fairy tales. "Crock of Gold," in particular, achieved enduring popularity, and was frequently reprinted throughout the author's lifetime. Stephens began his career as a poet under the tutelage of "Æ" (George William Russell); his first book of poems, "Insurrections," was published in 1909. His last book, "Kings and the Moon" (1938), was also a volume of verse. In the 1930's Stephens had some acquaintance with James Joyce, who found that they shared a birth year (and, Joyce mistakenly believed, a birthday). Joyce, who was concerned with his ability to finish what would later become Finnegans Wake, proposed at one point that Stephens assist him, with the authorship credited to JJ & S (James Joyce & Stephens, also a pun for the popular Irish whiskey made by John Jameson & Sons). The plan, however, never came to fruition, as Joyce was able to complete the work on his own. In the last decade of his life, Stephens found a new audience through a series of broadcasts on the BBC.

paperback. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Light Creasing on Front, Rear Covers, Spine; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Edges Lightly Soiled; Moderate Yellowing Due to Age. SYNOPSIS: To explain the story of this remarkable book would be as difficult and pointless as to explain Lear's nonsense rhymes or Lewis Carroll's Alice stories. To read it for yourself is the only answer, the only way to discover whose was the crock of gold and where and why it was buried, to meet policemen alongside leprechauns, to follow a philosopher on his journey and see the lovely Caitlin disappear naked into a cleft in the rocks. Part fantasy, part fairy tale, part polemic in the Irish war of the sexes . . . yet possessed of a charm that will captivate you. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. N° de réf. du vendeur 002039
