Jimmy Boyle grew up in Glasgow’s Gorbals. All around him the world was drinking, fighting and thieving. To survive, he too had to fight and steal… Kids’ gangs led to trouble with the police. Approved schools led to Borstal, and Jimmy was on his way to a career in crime.
By his twenties he was a hardened villain, sleeping with prostitutes, running shebeens and money-lending rackets. Then they nailed him for murder. The sentence was life – the brutal, degrading eternity of a broken spirit in the prisons of Peterhead and Inverness. Thankfully, Jimmy was able to turn his life around inside the prison walls and eventually released on parole.
A Sense of Freedom is a searing indictment of a society that uses prison bars and brutality to destroy a man's humanity and at the same time an outstanding testament to one man's ability to survive, to find a new life, a new creativity, and a new alternative.
Biographie de l'auteur
James ‘Jimmy’ Boyle was born 17 May 1944 in Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland. Influenced by his harsh surroundings, Jimmy entered the world of crime as a youth.
In 1967, he was given a life sentence for murder, a crime he didn’t commit. Clashes with authorities and solitary confinement ensued. But, in 1973, Jimmy was one of the first offenders to participate in a rehabilitation program that included art therapy, which awakened a major creative talent.
After his parole in 1982, and thanks to the discovery of his artistic talents, including sculpture work, Jimmy became an acclaimed artist and one of Scotland's most reformed criminals.
First published in 1977, A Sense of Freedom is Jimmy’s experience of youth in Gorbals, imprisonment as a young man and the courage to start life over again as a renowned sculpture artist.

And at one point, one of them started to give us a hard time about not going deeply enough into our davvenen, into our prayer. So I took a tumbler full of schnapps, said, 'L'Hayyim ' and drank it all down. Then I turned to them and said, 'How could you blame us for not going deep into contemplative prayer when you have never shared with us what goes on inside of you when you pray?' Immediately, some of them took umbrage at this, saying, 'How dare you ask such a question?' and then chewed me out. But Rabbi Avraham Pariz spoke up and said: 'You know, he's right. He needs to hear about what goes on inside.' Then Reb Avraham took a big tumbler-full of schnapps and drank it down and said, 'L'Hayyim ' Then he went inside himself and delivered an inner commentary on the traditional morning prayer and took us into his own inner world of sacred enchantment. But when he came to the threshold of the silent Amidah, he said, 'From here on is a private matter between God and me.' When people ask me to repeat what Reb Avraham said, I have to confess that I cannot repeat his words. I so internalized them at that time that they have now become integral to my own prayer. The best I can do is share with you some of what I have learned in my own life about deep prayer, for which, what I learned that evening is the foundation. He was born and brought up in the Gorbals, the poorest quarter of Glasgow, notorious for street gangs and violence. The street fighter was the hero to most kids - and adults too. It was in this world that Jimmy Boyle learned to fight, cheat and steal. Reform schools, borstals and eventually prisons became an acceptable part of his life, to an extent where it was difficult to define which in fact was the prison: the Gorbals or Barlinnie. This vicious circle was broken when he received his life sentence. Solitary confinement, brutality from all quarters and prison riots became the new way of life 'inside'. He did not conform and could not accept. In 1973 a Special Unit was set up at Barlinnie Prison in an attempt to rehabilitate the most dangerous criminals in the Scottish system. Jimmy Boyle became a driving force behind its success. This book is a fascinating, painful, sometimes horrible and often moving account of his life. 264pp. mass market p/back.
