About the book >.>.> The Itinerants: Russian Realist Artists of the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries by Andrei Lebedev explores the Society for Circulating Art Exhibitions, a pivotal collective of realist artists active from 1870 to 1923. This association brought together many of the most talented and progressive figures in Russian art during a transformative period. The Society aimed to popularise realist art, recognising it as a vital force for social progress and a better life. They organised itinerant exhibitions across St. Petersburg, Moscow, and other major cities, showcasing their works and earning the name Itinerants (Peredvizhniki). The artistic contributions of the Itinerants are regarded as a significant part of Russian culture, deeply respected and cherished from their inception to the present day. In pre-revolutionary Russia, their work received enthusiastic support from progressive intellectuals and advocates of democracy. Today, interest in the Itinerants continues to grow, with their art attracting vast numbers of visitors to galleries and museums. Their works are reproduced in large editions, and an extensive body of literature has been dedicated to their leading members. Moreover, films and monuments honouring these artists further cement their legacy. Educational institutions across Russia incorporate the study of their work into their curricula, celebrating the centenary of the Society's founding and its first exhibition as a momentous event in the history of Soviet art.The formation of the Society for Circulating Art Exhibitions was a response to Russia?s social developments, reflecting a collective rejection of the oppressive conditions under tsarist rule. Through various reforms following the 1861 liberation of serfs, these artists sought to express their protest and push for a more democratic society, aiming to elevate the state of Russian art amid significant societal change.
