Synopsis
This is a critical examination of Cuba and the regime of Fidel Castro. In this book, Timmerman comes to terms with what he saw on his journey through the country that he, like many others, idealized as a model socialist state standing up against US intervention in Latin America.;He talks to ordinary Cubans in Havana and in remote rural districts, to intellectuals, to university students, to a conclave of writers. Everywhere he confronts the evidence of the abuse of human rights, the suffocation of civil society, the bankruptcy and hypocrisy of the Cuban political system, the inability of the government to organize an economy that can provide the people with basic necessities. Finally, he speculates on what Cuba will do now that the Soviet Union has abandoned its role as the advance guard of Marxist revolution.
