Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents the results of a pioneering study into the inorganic trace element composition of river sediments in Illinois. The study is part of a systematic program designed to establish a system for the identification and mapping of significant chemical concentrations in sediments, ultimately aiming to determine natural base levels for most trace elements and identify adsorptive sediments. The findings of this study are particularly significant considering that, despite being surrounded by heavily populated and industrialized areas, relatively unpolluted stretches of some rivers still exist in Illinois, suggesting that a significant portion of contaminants do not travel far from their source but are fixed onto the sediments. The results will prove invaluable in informing future research on the behavior of pollutants in river systems and provide critical data for decision-makers working to mitigate the environmental impact of industrialization on our waterways.
