Following the Great Depression, the government conducted a survey of the unemployed to better serve and understand the needs of its citizens. The survey included questions about income, occupation, age, dependents, and working hours. In addition to the unemployment survey, the book includes the findings of a subsequent enumerative census, designed to check the accuracy of the voluntary survey. Through these two surveys, the author was able to make inferences about the population of workers not captured in the original survey, like housewives supplementing their family income and those only seeking work due to circumstance rather than financial necessity. This book provides a snapshot of the experiences of the American worker in the late 1930s.
