Very few persons, however, have tried to obtain a more intimate knowledge of this remarkable character. Yet, besides the import ance of his voyages, his career offers a great and unique moral interest._ More than any other man Hudson has identified himself with One sole idea, in the service of which he laboured with match less heroism. All these valiant efforts were in vain, and led him to a frightful martyrdom. And yet he owes to these same fruitless achievements a justly-earned renown, greater than that at which he aimed.
