Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a completely new approach to water analysis, focusing on the determination of nitrogenous organic matter to assess the quality and safety of water intended for household use. The author's innovative method, termed the ammonia method, and proposed by Mr Miles H. Smith and themselves at a meeting of the Chemical Society last year, is presented in detail. A prominent feature of the book is its copiousness in examples, more especially in examples of the new determination of nitrogenous matter. The author has assessed the water supplies of London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow using this new method, reporting on their state in the summer of 1867. The importance of determining the amount of organic matter, and closely connected with it, the amount of ammonia, is discussed in depth, as the extreme minuteness of the quantity which makes the difference between a good and a bad kind of water renders this branch of the inquiry difficult, and excludes the employment of all the ordinary methods of chemical analysis. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
