The author argues that the original intent of Cathedral institutions was to provide a range of services to the diocese, including assistance to the Bishop, the maintenance of ecclesiastical learning, the administration of the sacraments, and the encouragement of general learning and charity. However, the author contends that these duties have been neglected or abolished, leaving the Cathedral system in a state of disrepair. The book proposes a number of measures to address these issues, including the restoration of the Chapter as a council to the Bishop, the establishment of theological classes and training schools for the clergy, and the use of Cathedral resources to support diocesan charities and church societies. The author argues that these reforms would not only improve the quality of the clergy and the effectiveness of the Church's mission, but would also help to strengthen the bonds between the Cathedral and the diocese.
