Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book seeks to explore the arguments for and against the tenets of Christian belief. The author, a philosopher of some renown, sets out to examine the evidence for Christianity purely from a philosophical standpoint, avoiding the language of faith. The author does not require his readers to hold any particular religious viewpoint to engage with the text, but instead aims to appeal to their powers of reason and critical thinking. The author first seeks to establish the existence of some supreme intelligence in order to establish a basis for his examination. He then goes on to examine the concept of human happiness, arguing that we all desire it and that it is the purpose of our being. He then proposes that the laws of nature are the means by which we reach this happiness, and that they are not immutable but instead can be amended by the deity who created them. The author subsequently turns to examine the notion of miracles and argues that they are not violations of natural law, but special dispensations of that law. This leads the author to an examination of testimony, and how we can be assured that the witnesses to miracles are reliable. He argues that, provided the witnesses are numerous, possess good moral character, and are in agreement, then we can have confidence in their evidence. The author concludes that, if we accept the evidence of the witnesses to the miracles of Christ, then we must also accept the truth of Christian doctrine.
