Building on earlier work by scholars such as Wagner, the author goes beyond existing research parameters to delineate the psychological and social factors that drive individuals to end their lives. The author first demonstrates that suicide rates have steadily increased alongside the advent and progression of modern society, and that this holds true across the globe. Crucially, this increase is not only constant but highly regular: more people attempt suicide at predictable times of year, and more people in specific age groups, social conditions, and professions attempt suicide than others. While some existing ideas are confirmed - that urban populations are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts than rural ones, for example - the author challenges others.
