Synopsis
This volume contains extracts from George Eliot's Letters and Journals describing the background to the work on each novel, examples of contemporary opinions and early reviews, and a selection of critical studies on the novels between the 1860s and the present day. Nineteenth - and early twentieth - century appraisals are represented by E. S. Dallas, R. H. Hutton, Henry James, Leslie Stephen, Marcel Proust, D. H. Laurence and Virginia Woolf. Modern commentaries are by Henry Auster, Joan Bennet, David Carroll, R. P. Draper, Barbara Hardy, R. H. Lee, Laurence Lerner, Margaret Mein and Jerome Thale.

À propos de l'auteur
The volume editor, R. P. Draper, is Professor of English Literature in the University of Aberdeen. He is the editor of the Casebook on Hardy : The Tragic Noves, and his other publications include studies on D. H. Laurence and contributions to the Cambridge Bibliography of Engltsh Literature and to English and French journals of literary criticism.
