Cloth. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. What methods of interviewing and deata analysis should be used to investigate the images that people hold of their society? How can social and market researchers best represent the shifting froup perceptions and evaluations of such things as political candidates, occupations. life-styles, and product brand names for anything from breakfast-foods to motor cars? This book describes a number of new techniques for gathering and processing such data. It adopts a structural and systematic approach to the study of individual cognition and evaluation, going beyond conventional interviewing, , semantic differential, or personal construct theory techniques to innovative uses of free and constrained sorting tasks, comupter-aided content analysis, individual differences scaling and the mapping out of logical implications implicit in belief system. These new research methods are by no means untried or speculative approaches. Among the nuggets to be found here are several different methods for obtaining cognitive maps from interview and questionnaire date; - a system of equivalence categories linking components of Berstein's sociaoloinguistive 'codes' and the tags for Harvard General Inquirer system of computer-aided content analysis; a step-by-step demonstration of data reduction, by summarising preference orderings as directions over a cognitive map, and applying specialised statistical techniques to the resulting direction data. In its concern with adequate measurement procedures, and retention of the meanings established in the interviewing situation, this book is healthily subversive of those recent trends in socialogical methodology, which have emphasised statistics above all other consideratiopns. 305 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
