"What is the ultimate basis of our forms of language and most fundamental beliefs? Plato and Wittgenstein have contributed to the discussion of both sides of this question. The first three studies in the book consider Plato's contribution to it in the Phaedo. The studies on Hume and Wisdom relate to the second part of the question. The way Hume separated reason and feeling, understanding and will, made it difficult for him to see how a consideration of reasons could play a part in determining moral judgments and the will; he assigned a subordinate role to reason. Rightly concerned to rectify this mistake, Wisdom erred on the other side by not making enough of the personal dimension in moral beliefs. This is something which both Plato and Wittgenstein emphasized in their different ways. How we judge an action morally depends on both what the action is like and on what we are like in the sense of where we stand morally. But is the latter amenable to the scrutiny of reason? Can one ask, 'Are the values ??that I accept the right values?', as one can ask, 'What was the right thing to do?'? In the studies on Hume and Wisdom, Dilman argues for an affirmative answer.".
