Synopsis
Following Ronald Reagan's statement to the Soviet press that the living standards of the USSR are a third of that in the USA, this book was written to challenge the commonly-held view, which was based on a CIA study. The author contends that he uncovered numerous mistakes in the study, disagreed with the methodology used, considered additional facts and figures and concluded that the CIA was wrong - the Soviets are at best five times worse off than their counterparts in the USA. The book provides material on Soviet consumerism, including what the Soviets eat, drink and wear, types of living accommodation, what comsumer products are bought and sold, transportation, entertainment and leisure facilities.
