JOHN BYNNER is Professor of Social Sciences in Education and Director of the Centre for Longitudinal Studies at the Institute of Education, London University, where he directs the 'National Child Development Study' and the '1970 British Cohort Study'. He has previously held positions at City University, the Open University and the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys. His research interests are in the field of transition to adulthood, basic skills, social exclusion and longitudinal research methodology. RAINER K. SILBEREISEN holds the Chair of Development Psychology at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany, and is Adjunct Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at the Pennsylvania State University, USA. His main research interests concern human development across the life-span. He is currently editor of the International Journal of Behavioural Development.
