Synopsis

"The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians" is an authority on all aspects of music. It is widely used by academics and the professional community. First published in 1980, it is a successor to the five-volume "Dictionary of Music and Musicians" edited by Sir George Grove in 1878-83. During the 1980s and 1990s scholarship has advanced, new composers and new performers have emerged, new perspectives have transformed traditional thinking in many areas, and non-Western and popular music attract interest among scholars and researchers worldwide. For these reasons, a team of over 60 has since 1993 been preparing the second edition. Features include 20 million words, 29,000 articles, over 4000 contributors from all parts of the world. New features include: being revised throughout; new biographies, topics, 20th-century composers and 20th-century performers; world music; jazz, rock, popular and light music; and instruments and their history. This is the hardback edition with a license agreement for the on-line service which has links images, sound and related sites.

Revue de presse

"Grove remains the best single source of musical information in English. Given the degree to which it has branched into world music, pop and contemporary analytical theory, it may now be the most comprehensive musical dictionary in any language."--The New York Times

"The Grove is...a magnificent achievement, and, more than that, it is a work of love....Another remarkable effort....The book is like a corridor with a million doors, each opening onto a separate world."--The New Yorker

"...mark my words, anyone with a serious interest in music, whether classical, popular, ethnic or jazz, will benefit from this reference work's acquaintance....Nothing remotely as comprehensive or so extensively researched exists to rival it in the English language."--The Toronto Star

...this latest Grove, like every one of its predecessors, is...the most prestigious publication in any field of the arts.--L. A. Weekly

To be sure, New Grove II continues to uphold the tradition associated with the world's leading musical reference source...serving all who have an interest in music--with scholarly accuracy, authority and thoroughness.--Chicago Tribune

It contains an inexhaustible treasury of information and several lifetimes' worth of scholarship. It is clearly a publishing event of the greatest importance--The Times

There's something about the elegance and mystique of the printed version that does it for me. The tidy stack of volumes on the bookshelf is an alluring sight. And few could resist the sweet scent of knowledge which emanates from the printed page.--The Scotsman

Présentation de l'éditeur

Since its initial publication in 1980, the The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians has been widely acclaimed as an indispensable resource and a classic reference. The word "updated" doesn't begin to describe the thousands of new articles, topics, cross-references, and areas of scholarship incorporated into the new edition. Every one of the first edition's 22,500 articles has been reviewed and revised, with thousands of articles expanded. Previously neglected or under-represented areas have been examined, explored, and explained. Movements and topics once deemed too controversial or too far from the mainstream have been added. And throughout, 6,500 new articles cover more than 5,000 years of music history, instruments, composers, institutions, performers, genres, and more. The new edition also includes extensive, authoritative contributions on non-Western music, such as Latin American music, to less-examined contributions, such as Asian, sub-Saharan African, and Pacific Islander.
