Synopsis

To seek to overcome racism in the Church of England, it is important to have an accurate understanding of how the Church has been entangled with empire and how this continues to affect it. Church of the Empire gathers a diverse and distinguished range of contributors from within and beyond the Church of England who offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives on its multifaceted inheritance from the intersections of empire, race and ethnicity. Chapters focus on Jamaica, Hong Kong, the so-called ‘scramble for Africa’, the USA and South East Asia as well as England. Addressing worship, mission, civic engagement and theological education, they consider both the Church’s own life and how it shaped and was shaped by wider society and culture. Together they offer rich theological and historical analysis as well as a focus on the contemporary Church of England and how it might be able to change. Contributors include Anthony Reddie, Mike Higton, Evie Vernon, Carla Guzman-Rolands and Stephen Cottrell.

Canon Dr Sanjee Perera is a cognitive psychologist and theologian and currently lecturer in Mission and Evangelism at Cranmer Hall, Durham. She is also an Honorary Canon of Liverpool Cathedral and holds fellowships in Theology and Religion at the University of Durham and the University of Chester. She was previously the Archbishops’ Adviser for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns in the Church of England.
