This important book examines the relationships between teachers (often white and non-Muslim) and their female Muslim students in two single sex schools - one an urban comprehensive, the other a private Muslim school - and explores the ways in which these relationships are affected by different educational settings and experiences. The tensions between the twin priorities of equality and difference which shape feminist discourses in education are carefully analysed. The book begins by developing a theoretical framework which reflects current debates within feminism and post-structuralism in a coherent and accessible way to enable readers coming to these debates for the first time to develop a basic understanding. At the same time the book will serve to challenge the reader and can be seen as a springboard for those who wish to explore these theoretical debates further.

À propos de l'auteur

Dr Kaye Haw is a Research fellow at the University of Nottingham. Her research interests range from how professionals deal with social justice issues in their educational practice to issues around urban and social policies directed at young people and ethnic minorities. Recently she has been involved in a European project aimed at raising young people's awareness of the fight against racism and xenophobia. Her work with different Muslim communities in inner city areas has led her to work nationally and internationally in the UK, Europe and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. She has published in the areas of social action research, community development issues and methodological issues.
