The shift in human geography away from the "spatial science" approach dominant in the 1960s to more "humanistic" and interpretive perspectives has resulted in an increasingly important role for historical geography. The subject has generated a great deal of research in recent years and this book is a survey of its development, theory and practice. It indicates current trends in the analysis of the processes of power and control, protest and reaction in the past, and a movement towards a re-engagement with the relationships between people and their environment.
